Butcher’s Broom

Butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is a short evergreen shrub used therapeutically as a herb.  The part used for therapeutic purposes is the root and rhizome.  The active constituents are a group of steroid-like compounds named ruscogenins.

Butcher’s Broom is used in these conditons:

Blood Circulation:

Butcher’s broom’s ruscogenins content improve blood circulation.

Hemorrhoids:

Butcher’s broom alleviates hemorrhoids by improving the structural integrity of the veins of the anus.  The ruscogenins content of butcher’s broom inhibit an enzyme (elastase) that weakens blood vessels.

Varicose Veins:

The ruscogenins in butcher’s broom are useful for the treatment of varicose veins due to their ability to exert vasoconstrictive actions.

Dosage:

500 - 1,000 mg per day (using concentrated butcher’s broom capsules or tablets that have been standardized to contain 10% of their active constituents, ruscogenins).

If using unstandardized butcher’s broom products, the dosage is increased to up to 4,000 mg per day.
